There are four, and only four, business model types.
It makes no difference if the business sells a product or service. The core businesses of Apple Computer (NASDAQ: APPL) and hair salon specialist Regis (NYSE: RGS) both employ the same type of business model.
Size makes no difference. Kohl's (NYSE: KSS) (2008 revenues: $16.4b) and a local convenience store have the same type of business model.
It makes no difference whether the business is "traditional" (brick and mortar) or Internet-based. The book division of Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) and the superstores of Barnes and Noble(NYSE: BKS) both use the same model type.
Whatever the business, it is one of the four business model types.
